You are correct- that constant scratching causes damage and change in the skin. The skin becomes leather-like (lichenification).
Thanks for the comment

It sounds like you have 'cold-induced' urticaria (hives). This is a physical form of hives. One of the cells that mediates allergy, the mast cell, releases histamine in response to cold.
In some, it happens when the skin warms.
Stay warm!

Hi, I have terrible allergies with cold weather, my skin becomes all red and full with bumps and itches like crazy, I take pills, "singular", but they haven't cure me or anything, just calms the allergy when it appears, I live in florida, so my "cold weather allergies" don't really appear so often, but when I travel, or florida drops temperatures, I get my allergies. I'm 17 years old, so hoping I get cure or controlled from my allergies soon, because I'm moving to UK for college once I'm done with High School.

It is a never ending itch/scratch cycle. The topical steroid helps. Also consider skin hydration- dry skin itches too. We have been suggesting petroleum jelly at night, something like Eucerin during the day and Cerave (?sp) inbetween times. Keep the skin hydrated- moist and help keep the moisture in with a barrier ointment.
It the allergy literature- it is an itch that rashes.
Thanks for the comments.

Eczema is really so itchy and i cant help but scratch it. Corticosteroid is a heaven sent because it can relieve the itchiness and redness. ~
